The W580i is a fairly run-of-the-mill mid-range Walkman phone from SonyEricsson, which sets itself a small way apart with its Fitness features.
Though far from indestructible, the Samsung Solid’s tough frame and useful SOS feature make it well-equipped for the more adventurous phone user. Unfortunately, its lack of all but the most basic features mean it won’t impress in civilian life.
Aside from the first-of-its-kind 8-megapixel camera, the Samsung i8510 has a massive array of features to hold attention now it has company in the 8MP camp. Despite minor niggles, the i8510 is widely considered a formidable opponent for the N96 as smartphone of the year.
The Rokr E8 is a phone with very clear priorities. Geared thoroughly towards music it makes serious compromises on screen size and camera quality. Motorola’s innovative ‘Modeshift’ control panel also seems to sacrifice usability in favour of novelty.
Though its looks mirror Motorola stablemate the PEBL, the U9 offers some additional design features that have a real impact on usability. None of its features, however, live up to the promise of their packaging.
